Exploring creative storytelling with darkness and devotion, Claws of Chaos inject imaginative realism and poignancy into the classic rock format, with the emotionally loaded nuance and harsh detailing of Baby Down.
The closing single from the band’s debut album Collector Of Souls, Baby Down features a reverb-soaked guitar line that softly links back to the soulful rock ambiances from decades ago – think stripped-back Pantera or the likes. However, we’re quickly guided by the evocative fronting vocals of Claws of Chaos, a distinct and moving melody, backed by lyrics that naturally pour their personal reflections and depth into the process.
All of a sudden the song is enchanting, gathering momentum slowly but surely across this expanding soundscape and poetic retelling of its tale.
In short, Baby Down relays the medieval fantasy story of a man and woman separated by the imperial guard of an ancient Celtic Kingdom. They fought against enslavement, and so were separated, with the man murdered and their children abducted to be used as slaves. The mother escaped her fate and was left alone in a cave, guarded somewhat by her husband’s spirit. His spiritual presence then helped her realise her unique power, that she could unleash chaos on anything that created a feeling of deep sadness.
It’s a brilliant fantasy aspect brought to life, but our protagonist struggles to master her power, and proceeds on a tumultuous journey through a dark forest – encountering tens of thousands of soldiers; the very enemy whom took her husband and family from her.
Struggle ensues, as well as death, but in the end there seems to be hope and warmth discovered in the after-life. The world goes on, and the children are free to live more safely and with the prospect of a brighter future.
Despite its conceptual complexity, the song builds and concludes beautifully, the melody and resounding sentiment of Baby Down hitting with piercing emotion and memorable resolve. The whole arrangement presents an artistic encapsulation of the highs and lows of this story, the progression from lightness to darkness and back again, and the power of possibility and hope as we reach new realms. It’s a mighty reminder of art and music’s potential, and of the true breadth of escapism that can be found within.
