Ethereal tones and softly passionate, poetic and confronting references to personal turmoil – Cat Rinn blends dreamy production with deeply thoughtful, heart-breaking sentiments and ideas, for the beautifully compelling Tears In The Rain.
Catherine von Heyking is the artist behind Cat Rinn, a former real estate agent with a long-standing sense of dissatisfaction and longing that consistently unsettled. Following a subsequent descending into heavy depression, Catherine realised that this wasn’t the life for her – that her calling was something more expressive, artistic, and heartfelt.
After much deliberation and self-talk to overcome negative feelings of inadequacy, the song Tears In The Rain was ultimately born – an evocative and enchanting ode to precisely this journey – and it’s a powerful, impassioned, and relatable listen.
Stylistically rooted amidst the dreamy electro-pop tones of trip hop and mellow dance, Tears In The Rain is a piercingly genuine poetic account of struggle. We begin with the poignant relatability of “Only drunk foggy days, Only sink deeper down, everyday” – it’s dark and devastating territory, humbly presented by way of quiet and reverb-soaked, intimate vocals.
Things continue to roll along, big beats creating a tumbling tribal rhythm section amidst these layers of subtle synths and details. Then we build for the hook, not an intense build, but a modest switch to something a little more distinct and memorable – an idea and chorus that’s musically bright but conceptually heartbroken. The song addresses those statements and thoughts of amounting to nothing, of disappearing into the void, and the chorus effectively reinforces and loops that sentiment in a haunting but strangely euphoric fashion.
There’s something decidedly refreshing about Cat Rinn’s songwriting and performance humility here. The song is not structurally devoted to any mainstream methodical format, but instead maintains its artistic integrity, and just quietly concludes at the end – “I’m walking away, Cause no, I’m not tears in the rain.”
Also emerging with a club version of the track and an additional hip hop take, the former of which brings an all the more hypnotic, euphoric presentation of that iconic hook melody and effected vocals, Tears In The Rain holds the potential to connect and impact listeners from all walks of life. It’s a strong debut, and hopefully marks the beginning of a consistent musical venture from Cat Rinn.
