Another brilliant track worth hearing this week. French trio Carinya Avenue perfectly intertwine the familiar and the quirky, the gentle and the distorted, with the immersive and poetically compelling single Tiny Pitch Black Painting.
Standing tall initially on that familiar kind of retro trip-hop delicacy and design, Tiny Pitch Black Painting soon goes on to weave in a few unique instrumental traits that naturally gift it a clear sense of identity and originality.
On top of this, the performance is subtle but intoxicating, and the lyrics are overflowing with imagery and ideas that provoke deeper thought and escapism into the moment.
There’s also a likable balance between the acoustic elements and those more electronically sourced. And the groove, the space between layers, this funky-melancholic aura rising towards distortion and weight – everything just clicks.
A wonderful and impressive debut. Carinya Avenue are one to watch this year.
