Quirky diverse pop takes you back through the simpler tones and rhythms of the nineties, as Canadian artist and songwriter Annika Zee delivers a late-night indie treasure of an album.
Featuring modest electronic grooves that feel colourful but calming amidst the softness and self-reflection of Annika’s voice, Emerald Spy is an eclectic but well-grounded project, for which the riff-led ethereal warmth of Hell No makes an alluring introduction.
As we then move into Can’t Hear You, the soundscape adopts a brighter vocal nuance, with a bigger drum-line depicting a fresh energy, but still – there are roots throughout this album, and throughout the Annika Zee sound. Even with her diversity of topic and sonic approach, the indie pop style here is her own, and these songs are revealing, unpredictable but satisfying; often with distinct riffs or basslines as the active hooks drawing you in.
Wondering is an alternative and enchanting highlight, alongside the truly nineties or even eighties-like pattern and looping hip hop-like presence of I’m Dead.
“This album connects people across socio-economic & cultural boundaries, it’s about challenging imposed systems while also celebrating the beauty of imagination, resilience, and multiplicity.”
