Built around a nostalgic country pop set-up of organic guitars and slides, Bandit feels like a classic radio hit from a distance – natural vocals lighting up this rise and fall progression; these scenes of admiration and longing. As we tune in more closely though, and indeed approach the longer-form central pulse of the hook, there’s a certain desperation and poetic grit to the concept at hand, which I believe makes the song all the more relatable.
“I’ll sneak into your dreams at night, I’ll sing your favourite lullaby… I’ll read the lines upon your hand, you’ll fall in love just like I planned.”
It’s a clever and refreshingly honest way to write, a little dark but genuine in its relaying of the power of adoration and love, and the strong groove and uplifting chorus of Bandit helps reinforce that likable quality.
