Aruba four-piece activemirror. continue to bring the colour and melody to the indie shoegaze scene, with the summer-ready anthem that is Opal.
Great riffs and immersive vibes have always been calling cards of activemirror. – a longstanding act with a clear authenticity and humility when it comes to writing original songs. In the case of Opal, we seem to have stumbled upon their finest work to date.
The opening riff and the lightness juxtaposed by the quickness of the pace sets an easy mood to love from the outset. Before long, we’re guided through these intimate poetic scenes, by a voice that feels born of a much simpler era in indie rock. Think The Killers or even The Smiths, the latter in both tone and melody; the sadness and optimism walking hand in hand.
There’s a softness to the activemirror. sound though, almost shoegaze-like as it gathers musical momentum. And then there’s the hook, a huge chorus of passionate unity from every layer, gentle vocal ‘oohs’ maintaining a playfulness, but everything else reaching peak expression and energy. It’s an anthem for sure, and a song that would no doubt prove spellbinding in the live setting. I wish this band the very best in the coming months and years.
