Hi Shavar, great to connect with you, and huge congrats for the release of the new single. What’s the inspiration behind Not For Everybody?

The inspiration came from real life. I’ve grown to understand that not everyone will align with your spirit, your energy, or your growth. Not For Everybody is about embracing your uniqueness and letting go of toxic patterns or people that don’t serve your purpose. It’s also a reminder to stay grounded in real love and genuine connection—it’s about quality, not quantity!

Did you produce the track yourself, and if so, what’s your go-to software must?

Yeah, I produce all my music. I’m like Pharrell, Kanye, and Dr. Dre in one—hands-on with every sound, every layer, every vibe. I don’t just rap or sing—I build the entire sonic world. My go-to is Logic X, but honestly, it’s not just about the software—it’s the vision. I’ll sample, play keys, tweak drums—I treat each track like a film score with soul. Every beat has a story.

Is this kind of motivational and inspiring content typical of the vibe you want to present as an artist – is it important for you to have meaning in your music?

Absolutely.

“I’m an artist who bleeds truth—my story, my struggles, and my growth are all woven into my music.”

I want people to feel empowered when they hear my songs, even when I’m talking about pain or conflict. There’s always a message. Meaning is everything to me.

For those who don’t know – how long have you been making music, and who or what first inspired you to start?

I’ve been making music for over a decade, but I took a break to focus on film and family. I grew up around music—my father was in a funk band called King Rubin & The Counts back in the ‘70s. Watching him perform, hearing old vinyl, and living through the chaos and beauty of Brooklyn inspired me to find my own sound.

You’ve built an impressive audience – what do you think it is about your music and content that appeals so strongly?

I think people connect to the authenticity. I don’t sugar-coat my story. Whether it’s about loss, love, or hustling for a dream, I make music that’s soulful and honest. It’s raw, and it’s real—and I think people appreciate that vulnerability.

Your sound has evolved significantly over time. How much has your creative approach and your life changed since the release of your 2021 album Razor?

Since Razor, life has shifted. I focused on being a better father, I started directing films, and I built multiple businesses. All of that grounded me. My sound now is more layered—emotionally and musically. I’ve been blending soul, funk, hip-hop, RnB and Afrobeat lately but don’t tell nobody, and that reflects where I’m at spiritually: still sharp, but with more warmth and vision.

In what ways has growing up and living in Brooklyn influenced your musical direction and mindset?

Brooklyn gave me edge, heart, and hustle. You can’t fake it out here. I grew up around a mix of cultures, sounds, and stories. That blend of grit and soul lives in my music. Brooklyn taught me to speak from the heart but also to keep my head on a swivel.

You’re also a brand ambassador – what does that role involve, and how do you choose which brands to represent?

Being a brand ambassador is about alignment. I only work with brands that represent creativity, authenticity, or community. I don’t chase clout—I look for meaning. Whether it’s fashion, tech, or lifestyle, it has to reflect who I am and what I stand for!

What’s next for you in terms of music this year – a longer project, any noteworthy live shows?

I just finished my album Vartago, inspired by Miami Vice—it’s a fusion of funk, soul, hip-hop, and R&B. I’m already working on the next projects, which leans more into global sounds. I’ve got some live shows coming this fall and a short film dropping that ties into the album’s story.

Is there anything else we should know?

Yeah—this is just the beginning. Vartago is on the way! I’m creating not just music, but a movement. I’m blending sound, visuals, culture, and community into everything I do. I want people to walk away from my art feeling changed, even if just for a moment.
