Big beats and euphoric synths, a mass of detail united within a dreamy blanket of escapism – Bryyo kicks off the hypnotic album Past, with the pristinely ethereal tones and hopeful melodies of Visor.
For what initially feels like a simple mainstream celebration of soundscape and wandering minds, Visor also manages to prove recognisably impressive for the sheer level of craftwork and structural intricacy that makes up its lifespan.
Certain moments within the track are simply spellbinding, aside from the overall warmth and embrace of the completed set-up. Consider the mid-section’s fast-fingered melodic downpour, the brief absence of the beat, these contrasting moments of near-silent solitude, and the subsequent drop into something equally dreamy and well-conceived.
Professionalism and originality walk beautifully together, guiding us into this unpredictable but satisfying realm of contemplation and comfort. The music is both exciting and deeply soothing, depending on what you need from it, and Bryyo’s ability at the helm is undeniable.
The rest of the Past EP follows suit, a similar style but with a certain modesty or lightness for Southwest, then something a little more hazy and lo-fi, for the deeper tones of Static. And yet in stark contrast, the chords and notes chosen for the looping enchantment of Roma utilise simplicity and pace to weave a web that’s boldly EDM-like. The track starts off with intensity, later finding its flow amidst those spiralling synths and melodies – the likes of which prove a clear calling card of Bryyo and this album in full.
All at once we get the late-night appeal of the pattern, the beat, the volume, and something a little more intentional in its sense of playfulness and story. It’s a winning combination in modern music production, and makes for an addictively alluring project.
Manifold is another highlight, for similar reasons – this balancing of underlying purpose and sheer musical euphoria, and the same is true of the mighty Cell; for its cinematic depth and design that naturally stands out from the mix.
