Introducing something a little different from the UK’s own indie-rock outfit The Vanities, Private Army follows a ballad-like progression through delicate and poetic contemplations, for an emotionally loaded, passionate and ultimately powerful listen.
Emerging complete with a gripping set of initially monochrome visuals, which further the heartbreaking ideas and reflections of the lyrics, Private Army feels like a well-crafted, artistic yet timeless pop-rock hit; perhaps the kind of thing we might have heard from the likes of the Manics or U2, back in the day. There’s a cleanness of style and clarity of performance and lyric here though, even in their poetic wonder, the band connect in a simple and relatable fashion. The production and presentation of Private Army also allows it to naturally lure you in; more and more so as things progress.
Featuring an impressively explosive latter half, rising up from near-acoustic beginnings through a full-band arrangement with additional strings and orchestral depth, Private Army gathers momentum throughout, consistently underlining the desperation, longing and empowerment at its core.
