Introducing something a little different from the UK’s own indie-rock outfit The Vanities, Private Army follows a ballad-like progression through delicate and poetic contemplations, for an emotionally loaded, passionate and ultimately powerful listen.
Emerging complete with a gripping set of initially monochrome visuals, which further the heartbreaking ideas and reflections of the lyrics, Private Army feels like a well-crafted, artistic yet timeless pop-rock hit; perhaps the kind of thing we might have heard from the likes of the Manics or U2, back in the day. There’s a cleanness of style and clarity of performance and lyric here though, even in their poetic wonder, the band connect in a simple and relatable fashion. The production and presentation of Private Army also allows it to naturally lure you in; more and more so as things progress.
Featuring an impressively explosive latter half, rising up from near-acoustic beginnings through a full-band arrangement with additional strings and orchestral depth, Private Army gathers momentum throughout, consistently underlining the desperation, longing and empowerment at its core.
A humble yet striking release, from a well-respected band who subtly employ a refreshing level of unexpectedness to each new project. Private Army will hit streaming platforms on March 31st. You can also catch The Vanities playing live and unplugged at Cardiff’s legendary Acapela Studios, on the 16th and 17th of May.
