Seattle-born and currently based in London, LONGBOAT promises a refreshingly characterful take on both creative songwriting and the perspective of an American living in the UK.
Proud of My Postcode presents as a kind of immersive indie-funk and jazz-fusing band ambiance at first, A Fox in Hoxton acting as a psychedelic groove, with multiple layers of different instruments gifted time to play out and calm you. Then alongside this, we get a surprisingly up-front indie vocal, half spoken and half sung, which proceeds to take us through scenes and experiences that are detailed, loaded with imagery and ideas both intriguing and cleverly metaphorical.
It’s an original and still catchy style, and Longboat naturally stands out for his ability to captivate with something interesting and mildly quirky. The artist blends comical potential with poignant depth, and this counters the psychedelic basslines, keys and beats found throughout the brilliant instrumental production of Proud Of My Postcode, as well as the guy-next-door accessible nature of the voice.
A great album, the kind you want to spend a little more time with, and which promises some new insight or highlight every time you return.
