Exploring themes of entropy and chaos, by way of love stories and sentiments revolving around an envisioned love triangle, EN-TRO-PY sees us follow a specific protagonist, through tales of personal longing, depth, isolation and fear, and all of this begins with the beautifully anthemic, impassioned and powerful alternative rock song Flash.
It’s a sensational opening track, poignant yet energising, a careful balance of pop-punk, grunge and alternative rock, with that superb songwriting nuance and genuine voice of Dan as the driving force throughout.
An ambitious but effective, immersive and thought-provoking album, EN-TRO-PY continues to thrive with these qualities, but promises an eclectic playlist with introspective songs like Say I Love You, somewhat intimate and whispered, later powerful and painfully relatable, along with somewhat lighter and more playful grooves (with a countering sense of disillusionment or impending doom), such as for Wasting My Time.
Contrast is key, melodic moments of joy juxtaposing a sense of desperation or endless searching for clarity, and almost always we get moments of quietness contrasted by these huge crescendos that sweep you off your feet. And the performance is so valuable in its pure humanity – no AI-generated glare, but real, raspy integrity and charm. The kind of voice that still draws us back to nineties and 2000s alternative rock and emo.
Eleven songs line the walls of EN-TRO-PY, with DAN FROM DOWNINGTON exercising a freedom of both design and storytelling.
