Swedish producer Mattias Pettersson – Known to the scene as Magmar Internationaell C – the creative unconfined by style but impassioned by all things electronic escapism – released an impressive set of three brand new mixes this past month, and proceeds to raise the bar in every case.

Roughly fifty minutes to a project, we begin with the enchanting electro panning of Trainstation Mixan other-worldly chaos of sounds, united by a relentless beat and some quirky, aptly-relevant samples that help make the mix recognisable. That quality is rare and refreshing, a calling card of Magmar Internationell C.

As the mix continues, waves of highs and lows intermittently fill the room, the simplicity of a humble beat still maintaining nostalgia amidst an otherwise experimental but fitting exploration of movement and audio expression.

Things get fuzzy later, retro even as we reach the mid point – always this conceptual link back to the train station appears to take precedent. Then there’s the ambient breakdown, followed by the return of the classic all-night house minimalism, as we’re reminded of the breadth of influences, from The Prodigy to Chemical Brothers, that inspired the creative freedom of Magmar Internationell C.

Simplicity is held on to as we enter the Fortress VS Headquaarter Mix. Let the professional guide you, the mystique of the title and the timeless embrace of a light groove and distorted distant intrigue offer a dreamy through tropical to euphoric level of evolution. After the halfway point, we return to the familiarity of the opening groove, but there’s plenty to look out for – playful originality weaves in a multitude of unorthodox sounds and fragments for the latter half.

Most recently, The Flying Dutchman hits with intense tribal to industrial rawness. Pure rhythmic hits and sheer pace raise the pulse from the outset, an orchestrated chaos of retro and contemporary sounds, spiralling around us as we’re plunged deeper into the machine-like power and noise of the new mix.

Mattias highlights his prestige at the helm as a beatmaker here, the minimalism and the shuffles, the weight and the rises, the masterful use of space. It’s a niche sub-genre but one with avid fans who will no doubt appreciate the nuance, intricacies and intentions of The Flying Dutchman Mix.

Unconfined by expectation or style, Magmar Internationell C continues to push the boat out with confidence and charisma. The music underlines a certain freedom and professionalism, as well as drawing focus to a musician with a lifelong, unwavering passion for the vastness and artistry of electronic sound design.
