Dreamy indie surf-rock with gentle vocals and a catchy melodic thread is quick to lift the mood – Bakerfield explore the excitement and nostalgia of falling in love, with the scene setting and emotional brightness of Blue Lagoon.
Easy organic vibes and lush vocals are the driving force, but the songwriting is essential underneath this, and in my view, Blue Lagoon is a really well-written indie pop song. It offers a timeless style but an uplifting enough hook to let it stand out, and the musicianship is humble but effective – a trait also found in that leading voice.
Largely optimistic but also mildly evocative during those resolving sentiments of no longer being together, there’s a roller-coaster effect to the progression of Blue Lagoon, dashes of grit and joy carefully alternating throughout a colourful and ultimately quite anthemic mix. That balance and contrast is key. It’s an impressive track, and all the more enjoyable with each re-visit.
