Standing tall on the knowledge that sometimes songs need to hibernate for a few years, Mostacho Xprmnt knows that good art can’t be rushed, and the final release of Ocean – six years after its initial creation – speaks volumes on behalf of that.

Though it sounds like easy listening from the outside – calming folk vibes, plenty of optimism and beauty – there’s an element of depth to much of the writing that adds a subtle layer of intensity. A brilliantly unique artist and a really well captured new playlist. Absolutely worth discovering.
There’s something about this artist and this sound that just breathes innovation into the scene. At the same time, the softness and humble delivery of that leading voice is so quietly confident that there’s an additional level of realness and even something slightly endearing about the whole thing.
Morning Inspiration is everything the jazz and blues fan needs in order to rise up and face the day with a smile – it’s also increasingly impressive from a musical perspective, adding further fuel to the fire and helping cement this as a go-to project.
Lorine Chia has a sound that is undeniably hers, and the way she floats through the stages of the track, with softness yet intention, is beautifully captivating; and genuinely refreshing amidst today’s musical landscape.
Despite the complex and impressive nature of the instrumentation, it takes nothing away from the natural qualities of the voice. Impeccable production, incredibly skillful and absolutely worthy of any and all praise sent through.
Cruel Mistress is a great piece of work and pays homage to its musical forebears in all the right ways. It’s recorded in a timeless and sympathetic way, and lives and dies by the trials and tribulations of our companion for the journey – Scarlett Siren.
United Duality set the scene beautifully for this latest release, beginning the five-minute-plus journey with a live-band capture – a quickly engaging and brilliantly crafted bit of instrumental expression. In terms of genre, New Realms (that title is probably a clue!) is borrowing from all over the place. As well as the influences I’ve already mentioned, there is something of Ulrich Schnauss-era Engineers about the overall effect of the EP. It’s rich, imaginative, compelling and intriguing. It’s hard to imagine higher praise than this.
Jill has a sweet, bluesy voice, delivering the attention-seeking lyric with an authentic, slightly clipped enunciation that recalls the 1920s, all flappers and Lindy Hops! It displays wit, confidence and imagination in spades – and I hope lots of people get to hear this catchy little number, Because Jill Sargeant’s done a great job with it.

Chris Nole manages to captivate throughout this project, in the same instance as paying a more-than worthy tribute to the blues and its 100+ year history.
