Derek Lai takes a clear level of care when crafting original songs, this latest release being a fine example of that. Skillfully balancing professionalism with genuine emotion, Blankets is a softly seductive pop song with a partly organic backdrop and a quickly uplifting rhythm.

“As a composer, it’s my job to help fill in the bits that the show can’t tell through words and pictures, and to help give the audience member an invitation to feel something.”
A definite personal favourite from 2019 so far. A powerful track, eye-opening in many ways but also loaded with addictive good vibes that contrast cleverly with the depth of the subject matter.
Musically there’s a beautiful level of nostalgia to the track Shadow Visions. Fresh from the EP Where You Know Yourself, the song bursts through with immediate warmth, colour, and optimistic energy.
As the first few moments of music start to pour through, it’s clear that this is a beautifully unique, creative, melodic and mighty piece of writing and performance – the sort that follows its own rules to great effect.
The song is an anthem for the introverts and misfits. It’s musically pure – not trying to be anything other than what it is; which reinforces brilliantly the very sentiment at the heart of the writing.
Toronto’s K-Pop inspired group BANDIT have released a fully scripted, short-film-like video for their single Dangerous, and both the song and the accompanying visuals offer up something colorfully memorable.
Make sure to find the time to listen to this EP in full. Carl Lorusso Jr. has that special something that music fans have missed lately – this organic, soulful, natural ability to embrace & entrance the listener. Feeling all at once familiar & fresh, the songs brighten your view of modern music & remind you of the wonder that still well & truly exists.
I wanted Just Poetry to be an accurate reflection of life and being versatile as an artist is definitely necessary to capture those reactions.
Ferreira has a respectable way with writing and performing – it’s humble but professional, and effective in giving us those good vibes we seek out in music. The upcoming album is undoubtedly one to look out for.
To everyone involved in the album the work is indeed just poetry, you can hear that it comes naturally, and there are plenty of ideas to ponder as it all pours through.
There’s a definite hint of Leonard Cohen about Lorusso Jr.’s songwriting & the sound of his voice. The depth & the emotion, the delicacy & grit, all work smoothly together to give the story-line a certain weight & authority.
