It’s not all that often I’m blown away by how uniquely unexpected an artist’s sound is. Perhaps it’s that Can’t Buy Love was the opener – a brilliant song, gorgeously atmospheric, openly sentimental, funky & quirky in a subtle but cool way.
Folk Pop
An incredible songwriter, this album underlines that in a professionally crisp & consistently interesting way. Easily up there with the best releases of 2018 so far.
The rhythm of the song works really well in building around you something soothing. Elle Jae’s leading voice offers the effortless fluidity to carry the melody along in a manner that fits beautifully with the mood of the music.
Despite the familiar warmth of the music, there’s a notable level of musical detail & personality that make certain you would recognize the song should you hear it again some time soon. These little moments make all the difference.
What first appear as specific details unrelated to anyone else, later become the building blocks of your own version of life experiences or memories. It’s a strong way to write.
Making clear the distinction between that which is good, musically, and that which reaches just a little bit higher – Micah Woods’ single Fast Track is a song that feels like an immediate classic.
Easily one of the best EP releases of the year so far. Who would’ve thought the perfect fusion of ukulele, horns, double-bass & a slightly Damon Albarn-like leading voice would make for something so uplifting?
Rob Larkin writes & performs from a place of passion & experience, so the finish is always very polished, very well crafted, and simultaneously very natural seeming.
Taking a touch of John Butler Trio & a dash of something a little more pop-driven – Jason Mraz comes to mind – Jack Shea offers up a refreshingly well crafted, uplifting soundscape & melody for his unapologetically honest new single.
Emily’s voice leads with a softness that appears undoubtedly genuine, and with that comes an inclination to really listen to the lyrics – at which point the authenticity of her writing & her whole approach to creativity reaches even greater heights.
A total joy to listen to, not just because of the wonderful songwriting, but because of the flawless & clearly lost-in-the-moment performances as well.
There’s far more involved here than a characterful presentation & style. The meanings run deep, the songs hit like reality knocking creatively at the door.
