Some people get nervous going on stage; I get excited. As rugby legend, Scott Quinnell says, “those butterflies in your stomach turn into dragons!”
Hip-Hop
This EP pays a brilliant tribute to the days of real, thoughtful, gritty hip hop – the sort with a concept at its core, rather than simply a beat and a bottle of champagne.
Contrast is utilized well throughout this project, so rather than the jazz vibe just flowing freely, there’s direction & intention – there are subtle moments of weight & change that keep you interested & engaged.
It feels like a track of overcoming, a winning moment and a celebration – the video reinforces this sentiment and this energy level throughout.
There’s plenty that’s memorable within the music & the melody, so this balance between the contemporary sound & that which is a little more creatively free works greatly in the single’s favour.
There’s a sense of artistry to everything about the song – to the musicality, the changing stages, the passion in the vocal, the lyrics. There’s also a level of theatre to the delivery & the second vocal fragments that echo certain ideas.
There’s depth and a little sadness, this song in particular brings together these elements in a captivating way. The more you hear, the more it connects.
He writes to remind himself to act & in doing that he offers the audience a similar feeling – an infectious energy that pushes you to take steps towards your goals.
Twelve tracks & not a single moment is filler or worth skipping over – far from it. I could listen to this three times in the day & not tire of it. It’s been a while since that was the case.
Slim’s performance is easy to like – confident, characterful, partly poetic & partly hardcore. The production is crisp & colourful in a totally new way.
The single fuses soulful RnB with ambient trip hop & conscious rap, which on paper sounds like a lot to take on, but in reality – in this setting – the team have pulled it off with sophistication & style.
The project undoubtedly speaks volumes for the artist behind it, the ideas and the style introduce equal parts character and passion, which should serve him well in the long run.
