Cruel Mistress is a great piece of work and pays homage to its musical forebears in all the right ways. It’s recorded in a timeless and sympathetic way, and lives and dies by the trials and tribulations of our companion for the journey – Scarlett Siren.

Jill has a sweet, bluesy voice, delivering the attention-seeking lyric with an authentic, slightly clipped enunciation that recalls the 1920s, all flappers and Lindy Hops! It displays wit, confidence and imagination in spades – and I hope lots of people get to hear this catchy little number, Because Jill Sargeant’s done a great job with it.

The whole thing begins to feel like a circus or carnival-style song – immense energy and multiple layers of colour, but an underlying concept that leans a little more towards depth of thought and even darkness.

Prior to the release of their long-awaited album, The Kelly Bell Band burst onto the 2019 scene with a brilliantly vibrant and beautifully upbeat blues-rock classic entitled Long Train.
It’s a simple song, but it works – everything is on point – effective riffs, minimalism, realness, fun; the makings of a smooth hit are there. A great song and one with a fairly timeless quality.
Bud Summers combines detailed story-telling with a simple and spacious blues backdrop and some quickly familiar melodies on this new project Hard Lessons.
