Brilliant songwriting – it’s a pleasure to listen to such a hard-hitting contemporary band with so much vulnerability and realness at the heart of their work.
Punk
The mix is a little muddy, as befits the genre, but I like it – it feels retro, knowing and modern all at once, and the hooks are all very much in place. Strap yourselves in!
Energetically blending the nostalgia of nineties punk-pop with that of the Happy Gilmore glory days, Queensland’s Kid Fly kick into gear with a brilliantly well-crafted new single.
What we have here is a confident band whose confidence is well-founded – as it understands that dynamics keep a show interesting. Live albums can be tough to review, but this was easy – easy to get and easy to recommend. So do check it out.
Complexity combines with pile-driving power to root the song to the floor. The fact that the band switch effortlessly between pedal-to-the-metal and snatches of full-on syncopation makes Backsheepish an exhilarating, adrenalin-soaked listen.
It’ll hopefully be totally obvious that I thought this album was extraordinary. You’re very unlikely to have heard anything like this, and I actually can’t think of a better way to recommend that you should listen to it than just that.
From lyrical weirdness through uninhibited musical expression, Can’t Wait consistently keeps listeners engaged, often on their toes. Contrast is utilised brilliantly, droning moments of quiet desperation are juxtaposed by sudden passionate outbursts and increasing tempos.
A beautifully promising debut single, part of a week of impressive releases – they do say great music comes from times of great difficulty.
“A large part of my role is that I have a career, a living to make. My role as an artist is to make the best, most honest art I can; no more, no less.”
“The main thing we hope that people take away from Famous is just to be yourself and not get caught up in compromising who you are as an individual to keep up with the trends. That’s why it’s Punk rock.”
The upbeat and optimistic Ode To Joy vibe contrasts well with the language and the angst of the lyrics, resulting in something that – for half of its listeners at least – will light up the room; bringing a glimmer of essential joy in an otherwise turbulent time.
Consider the lyrics and the progression of the story as you listen, let nostalgia and honesty intertwine and overwhelm, and that’s where you find the sweet spot in which a song like this appears inescapably on point. Absolutely worth a listen at volume for rock and punk fans past and present.
