Young Mane Fuck Cancer (Prod. trapphones)

Young Mane’s Fuck Cancer is kind of exactly the song you’d expect it to be, as well as being nothing like you might have anticipated. Young Mane lets his lyricism and anger run wild on this track, giving off something of a freestyle feel at first, later evolving into this rhythmic and hypnotic spiral of lines and moments.

Young Mane’s performance style on this single has a definite level of angst in talking about this particular topic, though for the most part there’s something completely relaxed about it all – almost as if the artist is completely done with or over this, tired to the core of its pain and difficulty; as so many who are affected by this disease tend to feel. The voice has something about it that reflects the drug reference in the opening line, so you get this laid back sense of escapism that presents and contrasts greatly with the explicit hatred within the lyrics. The struggle is all-consuming, and this shows – the more you hear these lines spinning out and around, the more the pain of the situation starts to show itself.

Musically, the track has an ambient set-up that again contrasts with the inherent pain of the songwriting. The opening instrumentation has a dreamlike, electronic-orchestra sort of feel. A touch of retro keys brings a little character by means of a distant yet striking riff. Then you get the beat itself, this tribal-meets-industrial drum-line – this appears intermittently alongside of a somewhat more classic hip hop thread. The song has an overall haunting vibe to it, seemingly easy going at first, but hitting with more and more impact the further into the song you get – or the more times you listen. As an artistic form of expression, the song takes some of the deepest human difficulties, and presents them in an unfiltered, ultimately very real manner.
