Barcenilla x Just The Empress Rambo

-

Back on the scene with a smooth groove and a quickly engaging, memorable hit of songwriting, Barcenilla collaborates with Just The Empress and aims high in an instant with Rambo.

Structurally thoughtful, classically colourful yet fusing elements of hip hop, RnB and pop in a fresh, contemporary fashion, the single offers up the rhythmic kick of rap alongside of the addictive and anthem-like power of a mighty hook melody.

Coming in at just under the two and a half minute mark, Rambo leaves its mark from the opening bars and holds tight to your interest throughout. Short sections lead well into one-another, the beat alone proving characterful enough to give it impact – partly ambient, partly electronic, partly spacious and often subtly bass-driven. Then you get flickers of rap, hints of melody, brief moments of lyrical expression that move back and forth between the two vocalists.

While there are certain intricacies that help build dynamic and create a call and response sort of performance, the two voices seem brilliantly dedicated to the moment and the overall energy of the track – making it harder than usual to pick and choose who is guiding the way at any given time. The more you listen though, the clearer those characteristics become, and the more likable the whole progression and flair of the song ultimately appear.

Easily a personal favourite from Barcenilla to date, a short and snappy hit that’s decidedly humble yet relevant enough to quietly draw you in and keep you coming back for more. A last grasp at musical warmth and optimism before the winter months settle in, Rambo makes for a fine little boost of energy as the sun begins to set.
