Gar Francis Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

-

Under the label management of Bongo Boy Records, Gar Francis has recorded and released his very own version of the Bob Dylan classic, and the energy of the song is every bit as raw and infectious as you might hope.

Gar Francis’ take on the song is a pretty respectful ode to the original, in that it possesses a very similar and classic sound that brings with it an enjoyable level of nostalgia. The brilliance of the new release is that the artist has performed every part himself – the instruments you can hear are all Gar Francis’ work, and perhaps this is a part of what makes the whole thing sound like such a complete and effective unit.

The essence of the song, the vintage energy of it, even the original style of Dylan’s vocal performance, has remained a big part of the tribute, yet there’s a new and unique twist on the whole thing that adds something fresh. It’s exciting, a great pleasure to re-discover and re-experience the track in its new form.

At the very least, it’s a lot of fun – as mentioned, the energy is superb, and the nostalgia it brings with it is incomparable. At the most though, the recording is a testament to the level of skill Gar Francis has acquired in playing and performing the music that means the most to him, the music that he loves. There’s an honesty about that, a transparency comes with such an organic performance, and it’s impossible to fake. Everything from the vocal performance to the instrumentation to the added live-show sound effects have helped craft this track into an explosive few minutes of music. Hopefully there’s a lot more to come from Francis over the coming months.
